Download & Installation

I. Download and Install Java Web Start

In order to install and use the software FreeSurfTM, you need Java Web Start provided by Sun Microsystem. If you have not had it in you computer, please download it from the Java Web Start website of Sun Microsystem or directly download from here:

II.Download and Install FreeSurfTM

If the Java Web Start has been installed in your computer, then the next step is to download our FreeSurf:

  1. Once you click the link above for download, the Java Web Start will automatically download and install the software for you.

  2. A warning message will be generated by Java Web Start as the Jave Web Start stalling the software in your computer (see Figure 1).

    This is because no certificate is purchased from online business certificate authorities, since FreeSurf is developed by a non-profit group of volunteers over the Internet and they don't have any intention to commercialize this software. The ethics of distributing free software online are followed -- we always give it our best shot to make a program useful and robust, but there is no absolute warranty for using this program and it is users' obligation to determine for what purpose to use this software as well as the possible consequences of using this software.

    Press the "Start" button, Web Start is going to complete the software and start to run it. It's just so simple!

  3. After the software, FreeSurf, gets started, you will be popuped a window (Figure 2) and you are asked to type in a valid email address to which the IP address of the proxy that will be assigned to serve you will be sent.

    [Note: the email address MUST be correctly typed in and it MUST be valid. Which means, you must be able to receive messages from the typed email address. Otherwise, you wouldn't be able to receive the IP address of the proxy designated to serve you. We DO NOT have any intention to use users' email addresses for any commercial purposes, NEITHER to share them with any third party.]

    After you type in your email address, press "OK". If everything is okay (particularly the email address you typed is correct), you will see a confirmation as illustrated in Figure 3.

    This message also informs you that a proxy is designated to serve you and the proxy's IP has been sent to you through the email. (You should check your email for this message later. You need to follow the instructions described in Guide to configure this downloaded software with the received proxy's IP after the installation.)

  4. After click the "OK" in Figure 3, another popup (see Figure 4) will come out and ask you if you would like an icon of FreeSurf on the destop of your computer.

    If you choose "Yes", then you will be able to start FreeSurf by easily clicking the icon (see Figure 5) at the desktop. What an easy job!

    If everything is OKay, you are supposed to see the graphic interface of the FreeSurf:
